Concert Band
20 Weeks
1/2 or 1 credit
The school band program provides many opportunities for the individual
growth of each student. It focuses on offering experience to young people that
will result in their finding joy and excitement in the creative art of music.
The program aims to continue the development of music appreciation and
understanding through the study and performance of the best in music. It aims to
develop competent performers who are able to use their instruments to facilitate
the development of music appreciation, to offer those who are considering music
as a vocation, an opportunity to develop their talents to the utmost, and to
better prepare them for this vocation. The program aims to promote and enhance
the dignity and reputation of the school through traditional in and out of
school appearances. The program aims to provide emotional outlets and social
interaction. It is a credit-bearing subject and may be used with the theory
courses to provide a major sequence towards a Regents diploma.
Concert Choir
20 Weeks
1/2 or 1 credit
The Concert Choir provides an individual and collective
approach to the cultural, intellectual, and musical growth of each student in
the area of musical performance. The curriculum is aligned with the NY State
Standards for the Arts and encourages the development of each student in all
four standards through daily, active participation and public performances.
Students in this performance ensemble will find themselves in a supportive
environment where their peer interaction enhances their own enjoyment toward
attaining high levels of musical proficiency while providing a solid foundation
for participation in other performance opportunities including: NYSSMA Solo
festival, Bi-County, Area All-State and Conference All-State choirs, the school
musical, the Select Vocal Ensemble, and other community opportunities. The vocal
program provides a cultural link to the community and promotes continual service
to all. Any student in this performance group who wishes to participate in
further musical pursuits, public performances, and competition trips may elect
to participate in any of the regional opportunities mentioned including
auditioning for the Thousand Islands Select Vocal Ensemble, a non-credit bearing
extra-curricular group, known for its major role in the community and its
numerous accolades. This course may be used with any other course to provide a
major sequence towards a Regents diploma.
Music Theory
20 Weeks
1/2 credit
This course is designed for the music major as well as the non-music
major. Its emphasis is aimed at beginning fundamentals of music, including:
rhythm, melody, harmony, dictation, ear-training, sight-singing as well as:
music history, form and literature. Computerized theory programs, which start
from the very beginning and go to the most advanced level with electronic
keyboards, supplement classroom instruction and ensure a "hands-on" approach.
Students can opt for extra lab time during free periods if more individualized
time is desired. The music major will acquire a new as well as an enhanced
understanding of music as a preparatory course to level II. The non-music major
will gain a new and greater understanding of how music is constructed and how
closely today's music is related to that of the past.
Music Theory II
20 Weeks
1/2 credit
Prerequisite: Music Theory I, or a passing score on a
proficiency exam.
This course is designed to take the fundamentals of course level I and
become more advanced through composition, ear-training, dictation, sight-singing
and all other elements of rhythm, melody and harmony. "Hands-on" work at the
keyboards and with supplemental theory programs are also a part of this course
with the option of individualized lab time. Music history and literature are
integral parts of this course as well. The student who is a college-bound music
major will be well prepared for entrance exams to music school after taking this
course. |
