Dear Parents,
It’s October, and the weather feels like it’s beginning to change! Students spent time this week learning the writing process and composing thank you letters to the Jefferson County Historical Society and WWNY-TV. They are learning to revise and use an editing checklist. When final copies are completed, they will be mailed to each place. In math the students took a quiz on Section B of Chapter 1. Some students found that they have to keep practicing rounding two-, three– and four-digit numbers to the nearest ten and hundred. Many students achieved success using the problem solving strategies of draw a picture and make an organized list. The math curriculum is a challenging one! Any help you can give your child will be beneficial. I was very pleased with the results of our first social studies quiz! Most students did a great job demonstrating their knowledge of the three branches of government. For those who want to improve their score, I am administering a retest on Monday, Oct. 6. Our study of buoyancy continues. This week the students were introduced to the concept of volume (the amount of space an object takes up), and used the method of water displacement to measure the volume of a ball of clay, a rock, a golf ball and a plastic cube. You may want to ask your child to describe this process to you and to share some of his/her results. I have enjoyed chatting with you on the phone regarding your child’s adjustment to the new school year. Your comments, questions, and concerns are greatly appreciated. If you haven’t received a call from me yet, don’t worry. You will!
Sincerely,
|
