Hello!  Welcome to "The Mellon Patch!"  I can't wait to meet you!  I'm excited about second grade!  We are going to have a great year!

I'm sure you are wondering what you'll need to begin the year.  I would like you to bring these things to school with you on Tuesday, September 7th: one 70 count spiral notebook, a folder for weekly papers, two #2 pencils, a box of crayons (no bigger than 24 count), a box of tissues, an art smock (an adult size t-shirt works best), a water bottle (with your name on it), a solid glue stick, a bottle of hand sanitizer, a bottle of liquid hand soap, and a great big smile!!!

Our school day will begin at 8:50.  You may begin coming into the classroom at 8:30.  There will be morning language and math sheets as well as journal writing for you to work on.  At the end of the day if you walk home you will leave at 3:00 and if you ride a bus you will leave at 3:05.  If you are not going home at the end of the day please have your parents send in a note so the office can write you a pass.

The lunch program will be run like it was the end of last year.  Your parents will need to send in money for the week on Monday.  Have your Mom or Dad write your name and the room number (104) on the envelope and bring it to school with you the beginning of each week.

Our classroom is known as "The Mellon Patch".  Can you guess why?  On the first day of school you will be able to find your way to room 104 by following the watermelon slices.  I would like your help with our first hall display, "Slices of Summer".   I have included a watermelon slice with my letter that was mailed home.  I would like you to draw a picture of your favorite summer moment and write a couple of sentences telling why the event was special.  You may color the slice of melon but please do not color over what you write.  After we share the "slices of summer" we will display them in the hall for all to enjoy!

We are going to be having our annual Open House on Wednesday, September 1st, from 5:30-6:30.  You and your family are invited to come visit the classroom and tour the school.  Please bring your school supplies with you at that time.

I hope you are enjoying the summer vacation.  Try to fit in reading, writing, and math along your "fun in the sun" activities.  I am looking forward to beginning our learning adventure together!  I'll see you on Tuesday, September 7th!

Yours truly,

Mrs. Mellon
