PowerPoint
Creation |
Activity 8.1.1: Everyday
engineers are asked to provide daily and weekly status
reports to their immediate supervisors. Most often this is
done using the PowerPoint® software format. It is
an excellent way to convey information through written text,
graphs and charts. Supervisors take this input, add theirs
to it, and present program status reports to vice presidents
and clients further up the chain of command. Engineers are
only as effective as their ability to convey information to
those needing it.
PowerPoint®
is a Microsoft® computer software program that is
used to design, organize, and show professional
presentations. It allows the user to write text, produce
outlines, drawings, graphs, pictures, clip art, and even
place short video clips into a medium that is both
interesting and informative.

Research Paper |
Activity 8.1.2: From high
level research to simple weather observations, all
scientific endeavors which yield useful data must be written
and reported in a meaningful way in order to share the
gathered information. Without the sharing of information,
there is little purpose in gathering it.
Many reports
used in business and industry are the result of meticulous
research procedures. Most college papers are a form of
technical research writing. Knowing where to find
information beyond the general encyclopedia and how best to
organize and present this information are valuable assets in
any undertaking.

Three Panel
Display |
Activity 8.1.3:
Do you remember participating in a science or engineering fair
competition? One of the major components of the evaluation of
the fair project was the three panel display board. In many
cases, it is challenging to condense all the information,
research, and experimentation on the board. The three panel
display remains one of the most effective visual ways of
conveying a large body of information to an observer.

Website Creation |
Activity 8.1.4:
Sharing personal information and knowledge, entertaining
readers, promoting personal interests, easily accessing shopping
alternatives, listing jobs, and providing contact information
are all reasons to create web pages. This period of time in our
history is often referred to as the
Information Age.
People want information fast because there is a lot to be gained
and lost by the fast acquisition of time sensitive information.
Think about the stock market and global trends that can affect
the value of stocks. When the 2005 tsunami struck Asia, many
companies were sent scrambling to provide help and relief in
part because they had a vested interest in helping the region
recover. People interested in the area were able to keep current
on the devastation and recovery efforts through the use of
websites and internet news agencies.
